Okay or not?

Postby Dugan » Tue Aug 07, 2012 7:23 pm

UPS guy opens the door to your house to toss in a package without honking the truck horn, knocking on the door, or ringing the bell.

Ok or not?

Yeah, that's my reaction, vehemently. And yet, when I called to complain, UPS explained that leaving a package in the house - the actual house (not just a porch, breezeway, or the like) - is acceptable by their standards. No apologies, no recognition of the liability this forces upon me (what if Boo had bitten the driver?), no recognition that their drivers might not cause harm, no nothing.

I'm even more surprised to learn that, among the people I've asked, I am by far in the minority for thinking the UPS driver had no right to open the door to my house. WTF, not even the cops can do that (barring a warrant or emergency), and yet it's ok for UPS? Unbelievable.

really NOT OKAY and as a homeowner, I would put up a sign to that effect (do not open my door, EVEN YOU UPS DOOD, or ELSE) as well as a letter to the UPS themselves. it's not okay, and you have rights. you just need to remind UPS of that. imho
everyone's right and no one is sorry, that's the start and the end of the story

I was shocked to learn that UPS, as a company, considers this acceptable. Someone who used to drive for them told me that "in the house" is an option to check on their computer for where the package was left.

I would be shocked if that happened to me, too. And the funny thing is, I've had UPS come when my front door was open but screen door was closed, and the driver knocked and left it outside.

It would probably only take one good scare from an aggressive dog to get any one particular driver to not do that any more, but it's really surprising the company thinks it's ok to put their drivers at risk for that.

That's so crazy, I can't even believe that it's legal. :alien:

I'm working on composing a strongly worded letter to them.

I wonder if that's a regional thing. When you say that UPS is OK with it, do you know if that's company-wide?

Yeah, this sounds like a weird regional thing. Some places are more open-door than others. I can't imagine a UPS dude doing that kind of thing here.
