I'm looking for a yoga workout that is gentle (because I am way outta shape, except for my chair-pushing muscles! ) and will strengthen my back. Recommendations welcome. :nice:

I would look into vini style yoga. It is what I took when my teacher was still teaching and is really therapeutic. There may be classes in your area or you may be able to find some dvds or guided stuff.

that being said, I recommend trying to find a class for a the beginning. It really helped my form and my confidence to know what I could and wanted to do at home.

*hugs!*

Oh, man. Getting to a class would be hard for me. :( But you are not the first person to tell me that it's the best way to start. Hmm.

I wish my teacher was still teaching and I wish you could come stay for a little while and take private lessons from her. oh wait, she might do that....

Krioalu style yoga is also very much about where you are at being just perfect, with not as much physical striving as in some other practices. They might have some DVDs that you can look into.

Yin yoga might be of interest, too. It's intense, but in a passive way. It consists of holding a manageable pose for 5 minutes. In that time, your fascia tend to release to a great degree.

Another discipline that is totally about where you are at is Feldenkrais. It is not yoga, but it is movement. The idea is to get your muscles to re-learn how to do simple movements, like turning your head, or the elements of walking, to bring greater ease. Fascinating work; not sure how much can be done on your own, but I think it would be worth looking into for you.

I hope this helps.
